Öko-Caribe - Duarte Province

Nestled in the heart of the Duarte province of the Dominican Republic Öko-Caribe cacao is centrally processed in a facility which maintains close relationships with its 165 farmers through technical training in agronomic practices and organic certification. In addition, owners Adriano and Gualberto have personal relationships with all farmers, offering microfinance loans for cacao related expenses They are also community based and provide personal loans for family emergencies or other community needs.

 

The loyalty between Öko Caribe and the farmers they work with is not only evidenced in daily interactions between staff, management and farmers, but also in their best-in-class, award winning final product.

 

Farmers here earn 33% more than the West African farmgate price for their cacao.

 

Cocoa cultivation in the Dominican Republic presently covers approximately 10% of Dominican Republic’s land area. Most of the cacao in this region is grown by small to medium sized farms. The Dominican Republic represents the majority of organically cultivated cacao in the world.
